This is the original, authorized Clackamas Coots style nutrient kit that lets you mix elite soil at home with simple, proven ingredients and clear rates. Built on the recipe that reshaped craft growing, supported by Coot, and still giving back with every purchase.
This recipe uses ratios you can follow anywhere in the world
Why this kit
Clackamas Coots showed the community that balanced inputs, real biology, and mineral support can outperform bottled programs. This is our official kit, made with his blessing and formatted for modern growers. Tens of thousands of dollars from kit sales have been donated to Coot and we continue that support with ten percent of income going directly to him.
What it is
A streamlined set of premium organic amendments that form the nutritional base of the Coots style mix. Pair it with our separate Mineral Kit and your preferred base mix to complete the full recipe.
What you will need in addition
- Canadian sphagnum peat moss.
- High quality compost or worm castings.
- An aeration amendment such as pumice, rice hulls, lava rock, or perlite.
What is included in the Nutrient Kit
- Crustacean Meal: crab and shrimp
- Kelp Meal: Ascophyllum nodosum
- Neem Cake: Ahimsa brand - best in the world
- Coots Gnarly Barley: Sprouted barley, lentils and corn. Milled and Organic
Standard application rates
Use at two and one half cups per cubic foot of soil, or about five to six tablespoons per gallon of soil.
The classic Coots baseline per one cubic foot is one half cup each of neem cake, kelp meal, and crab or crustacean meal. Milled malted barley is one cup per cubic foot. Minerals are added separately at four cups rock dust per cubic foot using the Mineral Kit.
Choosing your kit size
| Kit Size | Approximate Cups | Mixes Into Soil Volume |
| 5.33 lb Nutrient Kit | 12 cups | 6 cubic feet |
| 8 lb Nutrient Kit | 18 cups | 9 cubic feet, one third yard |
| 12 lb Nutrient Kit | 28 cups | 14 cubic feet, one half yard |
| 24 lb Nutrient Kit | 54 cups | 27 cubic feet, one yard |
| 32 lb Nutrient Kit | 72 cups | 36 cubic feet, about one point three eight yards |
Base mix guidance from Clackamas Coots
Equal parts sphagnum peat moss, an aeration component such as pumice, rice hulls, or lava rock, and a quality humus source such as compost, worm castings, or well made leaf mold.
Why there is no heavy phosphorus input
High phosphorus amendments such as soft rock phosphate and fish bone meal can suppress mycorrhizal life. This kit delivers balanced nutrition with ingredients that carry natural phosphorus at agronomic levels, supporting strong biology and consistent plant health.
Instructions for use
Combine equal parts peat, aeration, and compost or castings to create your base. For each cubic foot of base mix add two and one half cups of this Nutrient Kit, or follow the classic baseline of one half cup each of neem cake, kelp meal, and crustacean meal along with one cup of milled malted barley per cubic foot. If using our Mineral Kit add four cups rock dust per cubic foot. Mix thoroughly until uniform. Moisten to field capacity so the mix holds its shape when squeezed but does not drip. Let the soil sit for one to two weeks, keep it slightly moist and turn it once if possible. Plant into the conditioned mix, then top dress with worm castings at about two inches and water with aloe or botanical teas as desired. Adjust watering by weight and feel, keep air moving, and maintain reasonable VPD.
Notes on materials
2 cubic foot bales of peat typically expand to about 3cubic feet.
3.8 cubic foot bales typically expand to about 6 cubic feet.
Choose local compost or castings of known quality whenever possible.
A word on results
The Coots approach emphasizes balance and biology. Once your soil is built correctly, pH tends to self regulate, pest and disease pressure drops, and irrigation becomes more forgiving. Most growers report better aroma, stronger resilience, and faster turnaround with less input cost.
“A wonderful thing about a balanced, mineralized soil based on the soil's exchange capacity is that everything else becomes easier. The soil pH self adjusts to its optimum, plant disease and insect problems largely disappear, water retention, drainage, soil texture, and rate of decay of organic matter all become self regulating and automatic, weather permitting. The grower knows that the nutrients are in the crop because the nutrients are available in the soil. The soil life is active and healthy and helping to make these nutrients available, and the plants growing on this ideal soil have free choice of any nutrient they want, in balance, a balance designed by intelligent science and observation.”
